Description

Cut-out coin jewelry became popular in the late 1890’s, from pins to bracelets to necklaces, as “sweetheart” jewelry, the idea being that soldiers and sailors would bring these back to their sweethearts from their travels.

This hand crafted necklace is made of twelve Guatemalan Real coins of various denominations dated from 1863 to 1899. This necklace likely dates from the early 20th century.

Three of the small coins near the top have small holes in them as they were repurposed from another piece of jewelry.

Most of the coins have good detail remaining. The small top coin on the right has the most wear, especially on the back (reverse).

The necklace is 17″ long, and weighs 37 grams

The coins are 90% silver, and the handmade links and clasp are sterling silver. The sterling silver is not marked, but has been acid tested.

We have left the natural patina from age.
